2004 Orgullo Outreach Competition
HDA Student Chapter Orgullo (Pride) Program
Sponsored by Procter & Gamble, 2004 was the second consecutive year that HDA ran an outreach program entitled “Orgullo Outreach Competition.” Orgullo is a Spanish word meaning “Pride.”
Student chapters perform educational oral hygiene instruction in elementary and high schools using Crest materials. In addition, each chapter must do recruitment presentations to Middle and High Schools to make an impression on the students’ minds that they too can become dental professionals. Materials are provided by the HDA.
The competition culminates at the Annual Meeting when chapters present a poster presentation which depicts their activities for the year. These posters are judged by a panel of dental professionals. The winners receive an engraved plaque as well as a financial contribution to the chapter for future activities.
The Orgullo Program provides a framework for the outreach activities for the chapters in their immediate geographic area, which provides a great advantage.
This year, the judges had a difficult job coming to a decision with the high quality of all entrees.
The following HDA Student Chapters did a remarkable and creative job in their outreach efforts, as well as in their poster presentations:
Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Chapter
Temple University School of Dentistry
UCLA School of Dentistry
University of Maryland Baltimore School of Dentistry
UMDNJ New Jersey Dental School
University of Texas Houston School of Dentistry
Winners and prizes were:
1st Prize to University of Maryland Baltimore School of Dentistry $750
2nd Prize to Tufts University School of Dentistry $500
3rd Prize to University of Texas-Houston School of Dentistry $250
HDA Board of Trustees and Membership Congratulates all Participants!
