Communicating Oral Health:
Clinical Care, Research and Education

Once again, we find ourselves talking about the biggest and best Annual Meeting ever! Not only did we welcome a record number of participants, but also a record number of exhibitors to this meeting in San Antonio. The Hispanic Dental Association is fortunate to record our Annual Meeting growth from the First Annual Meeting with approximately 22 attendees to the Thirteenth (2005) with close to 350 attendees!

Even more important, this year’s scientific session schedule was considered one of our best, concentrating on communicating with our patients from a variety of viewpoints.

The “Pre-Conference” sessions on Thursday the 17th included Clinical Digital Photography Concepts, Endodontics: A Predictable Therapy and Financial Issues for the Dental Provider.  Thursday evening brought a true Opening Ceremonies Celebration.

The Keynote Address was delivered by Harold C. Slavkin, DDS,(Pictured at left) Dean of University of Southern California, School of Dentistry. His riveting speech was entitled “Renewing the Social Contract between the Oral Health Professions and Society.”

The Opening Ceremonies also included a preview viewing of the new program, ¡Sonrisa! A Guide to Dental Health for Hispanic Americans DVD and guidebook.  HDA partnered with the American Dental Association and Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash to produce this extremely useful program. Featuring Hispanic celebrities, Edward James Olmos and Silvana Arias as well as HDA members Dr. Maria Lopez Howell and Dr. Francisco Ramos-Gomez, the film and the Guidebook, educate patients in English as well as Spanish.

HDA’s President-Elect, Dr. Ernest Garcia and Tawana Burnett, Associate Product Manager Oral Care - Listerine Brand of Pfizer Consumer Health Care, introduced the film and provided background as to its purpose. The film was extremely well received. The Sonrisa Program will be available to all HDA members and Friends in late January, 2006.

Dr. Mario Ramos, HDA President, chose this ceremony to introduce Dr. Marsha Butler, Colgate-Palmolive Vice President, Global Professional Relations and Marketing, Minority Oral Health Initiative, who initiated the new HDA/Colgate Masters in Public Health Scholarship Program for Hispanics seeking to intensify their education in Public Health.  HDA was particularly delighted in the number and quality of applications submitted for this program! Winners, whose awards totaled $20,000,  were:  Andres A. Pinto, DMD — Philadelphia, PA , Moises Y. Salas —West Hartford, Caricia Catalani — Brooklyn, NY.
