For the first time, HDA presented a $1,000 award for the best original research study conducted in any field of research by a dental or dental hygiene student. Supported by Dentsply International, and named in honor of Arturo Santiago, DMD of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, this annual award has been developed to honor the exceptional work he has done on behalf of dental students through SCADA, the Student Clinician Program,
and his dedication to teaching. In fact, many of Dr. Santiago’s former students were in attendance.
Eligibility requirements included that the student be in an accredited DDS, DMD or dental hygiene program in US. All submitted projects were judged on the scientific merits by a panel of judges.
Preceding the award announcement, Dr. Gustavo Cruz, HDA Vice President and former student of Dr. Santiago, presented him with a plaque citing his dedication and commitment to improving Hispanic oral health through education and research.
Dr. Cruz then announced the winner of the $1,000 award, presenting a check and a plaque. The winner of the 2005 award is: Maritza Miranda, DMD at State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Miranda's research was entitled "Cultural Adaptation of the Research Diagnostic Criteria /TMD in the Hispanic Community" and can be found as #15 on our 2005 abstract list.
In addition, special recognition was given to the research of Fernando Urzua entitled "A Novel Approach to Increase the Efficacy of Anti-Tumor Therapies." Abstract is #20.
