Margo Y. Melchor, RDH, MEd
Margo Melchor is a Registered Dental Hygienist in Houston, Texas. Ms. Melchor has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Dental Branch since 1997, and also practices part-time in a general dentistry practice. She also became the Director of Community Outreach for the Dental Branch in September 2010. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston-Dental Branch, and her graduate degree "Master of Education" from The University of Houston.
While teaching at UT-Houston, Ms. Melchor held the role of the SADHA (Student American Dental Hygiene Association) Advisor. Ten years ago, she was asked to be the Faculty Advisor for the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) which is comprised of dental and dental hygiene students. She felt that this was a wonderful opportunity for the students to give back to the Hispanic community as well as establish the "team concept" of dentistry, which HDA proudly exhibits.
By serving as the faculty advisor of the UT-Houston HSDA, this enabled Ms. Melchor to become active with the national Hispanic Dental Association. The committees she has served on include: Governance, Scholarship, Membership, and Annual Planning. Her leadership roles have consisted of Co-Chair for the Membership committee and Chair of the 20th Anniversary/Annual Meeting last year in Chicago. She was elected as a Board of Trustee in 2004, in which she served a three year term. In 2007, she was elected as Treasurer on the Executive Committee and now is President. Ms. Melchor is also a founding member of the Greater Houston Hispanic Dental Association which was established in 2002. She was the President of the GHHDA in 2007.
Also, throughout her professional career, she has been an active member of her dental hygiene organizations and has served on numerous positions at the local and state level, including past president of the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society.
Other organizations that she is affiliated with are: Texas Dental Hygiene Educator's Association, American Dental Education Association, University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Minority Faculty Association, Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans, and the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdiocese.
