CE Series: Whats Special About Special Care Dentistry

According to the US Census Bureau, approximately 1 out of 5 Americans have a disability. Providing oral health care to individuals with disabilities may require modifications to the delivery of treatment and the types of treatment delivered. This course is targeted towards dental health providers who endeavor to identify strategies that increase their ability to deliver dental care to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (ID/DD), acquired disabilities, and other individuals with special healthcare needs.

Learning Objectives:

  • To review the history and current US regulations regarding providing treatment for individuals with disabilities
  • To describe common intelectual and developmental disabilities that individuals may present within the dental office
  • To discuss common legal and ethical questions related to treating individuals with speacial healthcare needs
  • To identify strategies and modifications to dental treatment options and dental treatment delivery for individuals with special needs

Speaker Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Mai-Ly Duong - Mai-Ly (My-Lee) received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Masters in Public Health (MPH) from A.T. Still University. She serves as a full-time Associate Professor and Director of Special Care Dentistry at the A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health in The Center for Advanced Oral Health. She works to support students, AEGD residents, and faculty treating individuals with special needs and complex medical conditions. She also works as a part-time associate dentist in private practice.

She completed a Masters in Education (MAEd) with a dental emphasis from the University of the Pacific and a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from NYU Langone Medical Center. Her many accomplishments and contributions to the dental profession has earned her recognition as a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD), Fellowship in the Special Care Dentistry Association (FSCD), Fellowship in the American College of Dentists (FACD), Fellowship in the International College of Dentists (FICD), and Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA).

She has a passion for lifelong learning and service. She is an active member of the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry, serving both on the state and national level of both organizations. She also serves on the Arizona Dental Foundation Board of Directors, Special Care Dentistry Association, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards District 5495.
