Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is recruiting dentists and oral surgeons to assist the faculty at UNICA (Universidad Catolica) in Managua, Nicaragua with the development of specialty training programs.  Both clinical and didactic training are needed in the following areas: endodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics and prosthodontics.  Those with academic appointment as well as those in private practice are sought. Residents accompanied by a qualified attending oral surgeon are welcome.

Additionally, HVO has an opportunity for oral surgeons at the Craniofacial Center of Hospital Regional Docente Las Mercedes in Chiclayo, Peru. Volunteers will provide clinical and didactic instruction to dental students, clinicians and faculty, as well as provide teaching and ongoing mentorship to the faculty and staff.  In addition to increasing the knowledge and skills of local providers, volunteers will assist in the development of a residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery.  Oral surgeons with clinical experience in cleft craniofacial, implants, trauma or benign pathology are sought for this project.
HVO is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the availability and quality of health care through the education, training and professional development of the health workforce in resource-scarce countries. By emphasizing teaching and training rather than direct patient care, HVO aims to create a group of trained local health care providers who can teach others in their communities. In addition to projects in Nicaragua and Peru, HVO seeks oral health volunteers for 1-2 week assignments in Cambodia, Haiti, Laos, Nepal, and Tanzania.
HVO’s Oral Health Initiative programs are sponsored by the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF). The goals of this website are to promote volunteerism, to share information about international volunteering with ADA members and the public, to connect potential dental volunteers with appropriate organizations, and to ultimately increase the oral health services available to populations in need by increasing the number of trained oral health workers.
